Birding, angling and walking safaris in Corbett
The part of Corbett that is not a jeep on a fixed track.
Walking in the buffer, mahseer on the Ramganga, and Sitabani when the core zones are shut.
Why here
The zone nobody sells you, and the one you should ask for
Most Corbett trips are sold as a tiger lottery: two jeep drives, a fixed track, a fixed hour. That is a fine first visit and a poor second one.
What the reserve actually has, if you ask for it, is one of the densest bird lists in northern India, a mahseer river with a genuine conservation arrangement behind it, and buffer forest where you are allowed out of the vehicle. Sitabani stays open through the monsoon and is exceptional for birds, and almost nobody offers it, because it cannot honestly be sold as a tiger zone.
We are not going to promise you a tiger. We will tell you where to stand at six in the morning in August.
On foot
You cannot walk inside the national park. In the buffer, you can.
Every jeep safari in the core zones is a vehicle on a fixed track at a fixed hour. That is the rule, and it is why most visitors never hear the forest without an engine running.
One property we work with runs two guided walking safaris a day in the Kalagarh buffer, included in the tariff, tracking by pugmark and sound with a tracker and a naturalist. It also holds angling rights on a stretch of the Ramganga under an agreement with the Forest Department and village eco-development committees, with revenue going back to the villages.
What special interest actually gets you
- Walking safaris in the buffer, where walking is permitted
- Durga Devi and Sitabani, the two zones birders ask for by name
- Catch-and-release mahseer angling, in the season the property confirms
- A naturalist on the property’s own staff, not hired at the gate
- Camera-trap and corridor-conservation work you can actually see
- Monsoon trips that work, because the buffer does not close

Sitabani is a zone rather than a property, and it is the honest answer to what to do here in the monsoon: buffer forest outside the core reserve, open through the year, exceptional for birds, and not a tiger zone. Several of these properties are within reach of it.
When to come
The months, honestly
- Nov – FebWinter migrants present, cold mornings, the best light of the year. Dhela, Sitabani and Durga Devi.
- Mar – JunResident breeding, nesting and display — and the months when the water thins and the odds on a tiger are best. Hot, so early starts.
- Jul – SepCore zones shut, the Sitabani buffer open. Quiet, green and the least booked time of the year to come for birds.
- Oct – JunThe walking and angling stretch, in the buffer rather than the park. Mahseer is catch and release, and we confirm the season’s dates with the property.
Reopening dates are set by the Forest Department each year and we do not print one until it is confirmed. Ask us and we check the portal for your dates rather than guess.
Before you book anywhere
Worth asking, whoever you book through
Ask us, or ask them. We would rather you booked the right thing somewhere else than the wrong thing with us.
Is the naturalist on staff or hired at the gate?
A property naturalist who knows the ground is a different experience from a guide assigned at the barrier. Ask by name.
Which zone, specifically?
“A safari” means nothing. Durga Devi, Sitabani and Bijrani are different forests with different lists. Ask which one, and why.
Is walking actually permitted where you are taking me?
Inside the core park it is not — at any property, at any price. If someone offers a walk inside the park, they are either wrong or about to break the rules with you in the vehicle.
Catch and release, or not?
Mahseer angling on the Ramganga is catch and release. Anyone offering otherwise is not operating under a legitimate arrangement.
Questions
Asked often
- Can you do a dedicated birding itinerary?
- Yes — usually three nights, two zones, early starts, and a property chosen for its list rather than its pool. Tell us whether you are after migrants or resident breeding, because the months are opposite.
- Is a monsoon trip worth it?
- For birds, yes, and it is the quietest and least booked time of the year. The core zones are shut, so it is Sitabani and the buffer — and we will say so plainly rather than sell you a closed gate.
- How fit do I need to be for a walking safari?
- Reasonably. One property is reached by a two-kilometre walk and a raft crossing, with a porter included, and asks that you travel light. It is not strenuous, but it is not a car park either.
- Will I see a tiger?
- Possibly, and more likely between March and June. Nobody honest will promise it, and the trips sold on that promise are the ones people come back disappointed from.
- Do you take payment on this site?
- No. We take no payment on this website at all. Any transfer is to the company account against an invoice, never to a personal account or a UPI number. If anyone asks you for an advance to a personal number in the name of a Corbett resort, it is a fraud — it is common here, which is why we say so on every page.
